Grant & Brett's Finger Injuries
We heard some crying from Me Me and Pa Pa's room. It was Grant. He didn't cry very often. He was a very tough kid, so I knew I should check on him and quick. When I reached the room, I saw Grant, a worried and uncomfortable expression on his face. I saw his finger: the top of it was hanging on by a piece of skin like a hinge. I quickly called for some back up.
We'd been through this before. Brett was 2 when our wrought iron gate swung closed, severing the top of his middle finger. We searched for Brett's finger and had Uncle Marshall sew it back on. Unbeknownst to me, Uncle Marshall didn't use any pain killer for that little operation. I held two year old Brett while Uncle Marshall sewed away.
Grant's was different in that the finger was almost completely severed, but still hanging on by his skin. He was incredibly tough and brave. We drove to the Urgent Care where Samuel gave him a blessing and the doctor stitched his finger back on.
Luckily both boys' fingers were severed just above the bone, there may have been a chip off of Brett's, so there was little to no bone breakage involved. I wonder how both times I didn't pass out, I think there must be some adrenalin involved when you know you have an emergency and your the adult in charge.
Both boys are extremely tough and now have stories to tell one day of the day they were brave in the face of injury.
